In chapter 12 of the Bhagavad Gita, Arjun asked Shree Krishna-which is
best path, Bhakti or Gyan? Shree Krishna answered him by declaring
Bhakti to be the best and simplest path to attain God. Swami
Mukundananda further takes the explanation ahead and says there are two
types of actions- mechanical and emotional. A 3-year old child doing
pranam to Swamiji when insisted by his parent is the example of the
mechanical action. The child doesn't know who is Swamiji, what does
doing pranam mean and why he needs to do it. He does it mechanically
because his parents have taught him to do so. This is not bad but not
enough. It will not free us from the bondage of birth and death. For
liberation and attainment of Divine love, we need to rise above the
mechanical-physical drill. Thus Shree Krishna says, Gyan is above such
physical devotion. Dhyan is above Gyan. Renouncing the fruit of action
is above Gyan and Dhyan.
