Swami Mukundananda in this lecture of Bhagavad Gita Chapter 12 says, "nothing in this world is achieved without practice. When we first tried to walk, we fell down. After great effort and practice, we learnt how to walk." Similarly in the beginning, it will be very difficult to fix our mind on God for even 5 minutes, but with practice we will be able to contemplate on God for longer period of time. Swamiji also further says that as we progress in this path we will start getting the Ras (bliss) of God from within, so we will be tempted to do more. This is the way to move ahead in the path of Divine contemplation.
